Back at sea


Boyardville, Ile d'Oleron, France

We arrived in France on Tuesday 17 and managed to leave our 'home' port of Marans on Thursday - fastest ever take-off for us. Things mo0stly working except perhaps for engine everheat alarm, so will have to be vigilant about this. We made straight for La Rochelle, Minimes - had a bit of technology shoppinbg to do after failure to pack XD card for camera (this camera this is so accident prone, I sometimes thing we shouldn't do it!) La R busy as usual. We hire yellow bikes, complete our mission and decide to leave the next day for Oleron. Weather forecasts a bit mixed but generally we are looking at thunderstorms ( last night ), North westerlies (wrong direction) or South westerlies ( right direction but a tad too strong).
Boyardville is a cut holiday destination, very busy, rafted to 4 other boats yesterday but many will leave today. We are going to the beach, reading, relaxing, Al catching up on a huge sleep defecit. Tonight there's a village party! More about this later, maybe.
We plan to head north toward home as soon as we get a decent forecast. Meanwhile luch is ready - bon appetit!!

Starting out

This is the beginning of the new web-based blog. Sitting at my desk surrounded by un-ticked lists, fairly usual I suppose at this stage with only just over 24 hours to go. Some jobs haven't even made it onto the lists yet! This afternoon Carol and Sally coming down to check out Spike Island Open Day. People ask me if I have packed - not exactly, although I have a short list pile of clothes in the bedroom and a pile of cardboard boxes in the hall. More later - and I'll try to take you with me on my journey to France. Give me feedback and I'll try not to bore you to death.

22 june 2009 Ile d'Oleron Engine progress, slight. Most of day spent up to elbows in grease and diesel - see picture. Swim - yes at 6pm in wetsuit. Food - fish soup out of a jar for lunch, followed by an orange and a chocolate eclair!, Petit pois and mushroom risotto for supper, fresh apricots and melon. Travel - none. Engineer - didn't turn up. Reading - James Lee Burke, Pegasus Rising (Jenny) Serrafyn's European Adventure (Al) Tides - HW 0540 Pix going up now! Racing Internet time limit. Bunk calls.

SAILING!

Glenans & Groix Tuesday, June 15, 2010 This our second day here. Since leaving PLF (whew!) our sailing adventures have begun. Our first foray out tested the boat and us. She passed, we scraped by with a lost sail batten. Back to PLF to replace it and then out that afternoon to Iles de Glenans – home of one of the world’s best-known sailing schools, started after the war to raise the spirits of the ex-resistance French. We see the school fleet just about everywhere we go. The wind was from the North so we picked up a buoy on the south side of the sandbar on the main island. First we’d tried the N side – too bumpy so we moved. Unfortunately it was getting late in the day so the choice of parking spaces (buoys) was very limited, like a game of musical chairs. We managed to get one with enough water – just. At low water we had about 30 cm below the keel – like floating in a puddle really.
